Container configuration
Where Docker Compose environment values come from
Distinguish Compose interpolation from the final service environment and trace supplied values back to their files and override sources.
The values used to interpolate a Compose file and the values passed to its containers are related but separate. Changing a service env_file does not automatically change every variable expression in the Compose document.
The environment explorer models explicit files and shell fixtures locally. Its source trace helps explain which value won and which inputs were not supplied.

| Stage | Question |
|---|---|
| Interpolation | What value replaces this expression in the Compose file? |
| Service environment | Which modeled value is passed to this service's container? |
A shell fixture can supply an interpolation variable while an explicit environment entry supplies the final service variable. Preserve unset versus empty values: default and required-expression operators can treat them differently.

Supply the command context and relevant files
- Import the Compose document and referenced environment files with their relative paths preserved.
- Supply the shell values and file choices you want to model; the page does not read your actual shell.
- Inspect interpolation and final service traces independently, including origins, overrides and unresolved inputs.
- Compare the explanation with docker compose config and its --environment output in your real project when Docker is available.
The modeled result is limited to the inputs and syntax the tool supports. It does not discover image ENV values, fetch remote includes, query secret stores or run Compose. An unresolved value is an explicit gap rather than a guessed default.

Review diagnostic exports before sharing
Configuration and environment values stay in this browser during analysis. A downloaded report can contain the values and source paths you supplied, including credentials. Review or redact that export yourself before sending it to anyone else. Analytics do not receive your configuration values.
