Depth-of-field planner

Compare estimated near and far focus limits for two lens, aperture and focus-distance setups.

Compare two thin-lens estimates. Circle of confusion is the acceptable blur diameter on the image plane. Choose it for your sensor, output size and viewing conditions.

What it does

Compare estimated near and far focus limits for two lens, aperture and focus-distance setups.

How to use it

  1. Choose a blur criterion and two lens setups, then compare near/far limits and hyperfocal distances.
  2. Processing stays in your browser. No upload or sign-up.

Example

At 50 mm, f/8, 3 m and a 0.03 mm blur criterion, the estimated near/far limits are about 2.338 m and 4.185 m.

Methodology

Thin-lens equations use h = f²/(N c), near = h s/(h + s − f), far = h s/(h − s + f), and hyperfocal = h + f. A non-positive far denominator means infinity.

Limitations

Focal length 1–2,000 mm, f-number 0.5–128, distance up to 1,000,000 m and blur diameter 0.001–0.2 mm. Distance must exceed focal length and is measured from the principal plane. Symmetric pupil assumption; no diffraction, aberration, focus-breathing or perceived-sharpness guarantee. No camera permission.

Automation

This tool runs in your browser. No upload API or MCP endpoint is available.
