DOCX numbering diagnostics
Trace a Word paragraph’s list numbering through styles, numbering definitions and level overrides without uploading the document.
What it does
Trace a Word paragraph’s list numbering through styles, numbering definitions and level overrides without uploading the document.
How to use it
- Open a local DOCX or inspect the example, then select a paragraph to follow its numbering provenance.
- Inspect paragraph properties, style inheritance, concrete and abstract numbering definitions, and start overrides. Download a diagnostic report.
- This is a structural inspector, not a Word renderer or repair tool. Document content stays in your browser.
Example
A paragraph inherits list numbering from its style; its numbering instance overrides the starting value. Another paragraph explicitly removes numbering with numId 0.
Methodology
A bounded ZIP reader and namespace-aware XML parser inspect the main document, styles and numbering parts. The inspector follows direct and inherited paragraph properties through concrete/abstract numbering and level overrides, retaining source paths.
Limitations
20 MiB DOCX, 100 ZIP entries / 50 MiB expanded / 200:1 expansion, 8 MiB selected XML, 100,000 elements / depth 40 per part, 2,000 paragraphs, 1,000 styles/instances/abstract definitions each, 32-link chains, eight-million-character report and a 30-second worker deadline. UTF-8 main document body/tables only; text previews stop at 300 characters. No final list labels, Word rendering, repair, table-style rules, tracked-change decisions or section restart simulation. External resources and embedded code are never loaded.
Automation
This tool runs in your browser. No upload API or MCP endpoint is available.
