Metronome

What it does

Keep time with tap tempo, accented beats and a clear visual pulse.

How to use it

1. Set 20–300 BPM, beats per bar and quarter- or eighth-note beat unit. Each click represents one selected beat unit.
2. Tap repeatedly to estimate tempo. Start listening and stop before changing settings. The first beat can have a higher-pitched accent.
3. Audio stops when the tab is hidden. Return and press Start to continue. Device audio latency may offset the visual pulse.

Example

Set 100 BPM and 4/4 for four quarter-note clicks per bar, 0.6 seconds apart.

Methodology

Web Audio schedules oscillator clicks ahead on the audio clock. A short timer feeds the schedule; visual pulses follow scheduled beat times.

Limitations

Requires Web Audio and a user gesture. Background operation is intentionally stopped; this is not a recording synchronisation clock.
